I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found myself staying up late to read more. The characters and the historical background are truly engaging, especially the protagonist Annie Charbonneau. Linda Harris Sittig does a great job of shedding light on the social issues of coal workers and their families. It's heartening for advocates of health and safety to remember that hard work in these arenas does pay off and that, while things aren't perfect for those who work today in the coal industry, they are better and that's thanks to social activists like Annie. Ms. Sittig tells her story with such positivity and panache - I heartily recommend this book!Product details

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. A great combination of fact and fiction. The main character.....Annie was such a strong woman. Looking forward to reading Cut from Strong Cloth!
Loved the book. Could not put it down. Also my 94 year old mother was very impressed and could not put it down. I learned many interesting details about life as a coal miners wife in the 1800's. Lot's of twists and turns. Would be a good book for high school students to read as a history lesson.
This is a book with fictional characters operating in an environment based entirely on fact. Enjoyed every word on every page as the history of a Western Maryland coal town unfolded, warts and all. The women are strong and determined! The men are hard working but trapped in a life where the scales are tipped against them by the greedy coal company. You'll love it!
Through conscientious research and insight into the challenges women faced in this late nineteenth century coal company town, Sittig has uncovered the prevalence of sexual abuse and exploitation as well as the courage shown by women of all ages who tried to navigate the poverty and abuse so common to their lot. Sittig draws compelling characters that the reader cares about and greatly adds to our understanding of this chapter of American history.

Read her first book, Cut From Strong Cloth and loved it. Excited for the second book, Last Curtain Call which I also loved. I bought it for a couple of friends who have loaned it to their friends. Everyone loves this author!!! Excellent writer
The author bares the underbelly of life in coal country in the 1890s, and the fact that American Exceptionalism has no gender... Sittig graphically and accurately describes the courage of miners' wives who fought a battle they could not win and would not lose. Their struggle was for their families, and more. It also was for human dignity, human decency. LAST CURTAIN CALL has a female author and a female protagonist, but it is not a 'girly' book. It is a gripping, well-written, hard-edged account taken from real life... life not in the gulags but in western Maryland, little more than a hundred years ago. This man reader loved it.
